Trying to see how long I can do without meat. So far it’s been two weeks.

  1. Watch your lack of protein. Add in some nuts, grains, and lots of fruit.
    Drinking lots of water?

  2. I don’t think I could do it…..I like steak to much….more power to ya bro!

  3. Yeah, that was the first concern everyone gave me. I only need 40-70 grams of protein a day. From what I’ve looked at on the packages of the stuff I eat I have no issues getting there. And for those days where I know I may not get what I need, I have protein bars on hand.

As for water, I go through spurts. Some days I drink plenty, other days I may not drink any at all.

  4. @Heath – Like I stated in the video, I’m starting to get cravings. :)

  5. Virtual high-five, Clintus. I haven’t had meat since last January. It’s one of the best things I ever did. It’s funny how people suddenly get so concerned about your health when you say you’re cutting out meat. Americans need to be worried about their lack of vegetables and natural vitamins–not a lack of protein. We already eat too much protein.

Anyway, good luck. They key is to finding lots of really great food (and learn to rely on herbs instead of cheese for flavor) so you don’t feel like you’re missing out.

BTW, fish is meat–I mean, I’d go back to eating fish before I’d take up cheese again, so I’m not criticizing–I’m just saying…lol. It’ll be hard without your wife if she’s the one who does the cooking. Good luck!

  6. The reason people get conerned about protein is because there are different types of protein and not everything non-meat with protein provides it. Meat provides a combination of proteins all together. With no-meat you have to get the variety of proteins from a variety of foods as no one food provides all the types you need. Anyway, as for eating healthy, on the meat side, lean chicken is one of the best out there. :P

Good luck on your quest on eating healthier. We all need to. Although I am not of the belief that not eating meat is part of it. You can eat very healthy with meats in your diet.

  7. @Noell – Wow, so you’ve gone vegan? Or just not eating meat and cheese? either way, props to you for sticking to it. And thanks for stopping by and dropping a comment.

@Bill – I totally get what you’re saying there. I still need to do more research on it. Right now it’s more of an experiement on how long I can go with out it. If I’m getting these cravings after two weeks, who knows what they’ll be like after 4-6.

  8. Good on you for trying that.I gave up eating meat a while back but started again after a couple years without. No reason for starting again though. Just wanted to eat a steak and that was that.

I’m kinda with Bill on the issue though. One can eat meat and still be healthy. I think it comes down to all the other things we put in our systems aside from meat.

  9. Wait a minute…

you decide to go two weeks without meat and then make an exception for some fries with chili that has meat in it?

    That’s still meat!

Considering hundreds of people have gone years and decades without any meat I would hope you would be able to go 2 weeks without making little exceptions like that. Two weeks since you’ve “really” eaten meat? Come on. And posting about it on your blog too, as if it’s some big, shocking, adventurous thing you’re doing.

Also, the video stops one minute in for me.

P.S. If you want a burger or ham sandwich, just have a boca burger or tofurkey.

  10. @David – agreed

@Pete – What I said was that the last time I did eat meat was the chili but the last time I had an actual piece of meat was longer than that. So I am recognizing the chili as my last meat. And for someone who has eaten meat their whole lives to just stop seems like a big deal to me. And I’m just going to see how long I can go without.

Not sure why it stops a minute in for you. Sorry.

Bill–I disagree. The reason Americans (not so much other people) get concerned about protein is b/c the meat industry has convinced everyone that we need more of it than we do, and that meat is the only reliable source–thanks to their in with the Agricultural Department.

Proteins are made up of a combination of amino acids and meat has complete combinations. But meat isn’t the only food that has complete protein. Quinoa, which is an herb that seems like a grain, is a complete protein. To make sure you get an adequate variety of amino acids, and therefore, adequate protein, all we have to do is eat a variety of plant foods: whole grains like brown rice, oats (oatmeal), beans, tofu, nuts, legumes…even leafy green vegetables are a source of protein. Our bodies are totally capable of using the varied amino acids from different sources to make the protein we need.

I would bet I get a lot greater variety of proteins than most Americans just from beans alone because I eat about 8-10 different types of beans, plus all the other sources of protein I consume–as opposed to many Americans whose only source is chicken, pig, and cow and rarely have beans, whole grains, or green leafy vegetables.
