Going Mobile

At this exact moment I am inside a McDonald’s play area watching the kids run around, swing and slide while I sit here on my laptop blogging. Yes McDonald’s has wifi that you can purchase or be a member of some service to use but I’m connected via a mobile broadband card. Since I started using one of these my time spent on the internet has increased immensely. The more time I spend on the internet the more stuff I feel I’m getting done and therefore the happier I am overall. Now when I say getting stuff done I simply mean my personal priorities such as catching up on RSS, chatting with friends via IM, popping in on Facebook, uploading photos and videos; you know, MY priorities. And if I’m happier overall then my wife is happier period.

I get to do all of these things more frequently because I can connect to the web more often. There are many times that I’m at a location due to a family function or something I’m doing for the kids, such as hanging out at McDonald’s. And even though there are reasons for hanging out at these venues or events, my full attention or participation isn’t always needed. This makes for a perfect oppertunity to bust out the MacBook and get stuff done. I will admit, I can do a lot of my spot checking on the iPhone now but nothing will ever take the place of a laptop.

The point of this post is simply to say that making one little purchase (and signing a two year contract) has made a huge impact on my life. Hanging out on the internet and being with my friends means a lot to me and I can now do that more often. What simple things can you do to make that kind of impact on your life?

  1. The iPhone in general *was* that purchase for me so far. I’m around Wifi most of the time I need it, but am able to handle EDGE (No 3G here yet) so far. I asked on Twitter the other day about renting an EVDO card, but nobody responded. Do you know anything about renting one? I’m going to Vegas in less than a month and thinking it could be cheaper/better than paying $14 (guessing) a day for Hotel wifi.
