New Shift
Today is Friday. The last day, of the first week, of my new shift; 3pm-12am. I have to say that thus far I love it. I get to wake up whenever I want which is usually whenever the kids decide to wake me up by being too loud. But still, it’s no more alarm clocks! Once I’ve rolled out of bed the day is basically mine. I can go for a ride, hit up the gym, catch up on some RSS, or just be lazy and watch some tv. Besides all of that selfish stuff I just listed, there’s of course more time with the wife and kids. I get to see them all everyday and we can do things together.
The work aspect of this shift change is substantial as well. There is far less going on which mean I get far more done and get to spend more time with my team. Plus because there is less people coming and going I feel like this is my department, my house. I’m in control and I call the shots. Not that I wouldn’t be able to do that during the day but during the day there are other members of leadership here so things get split up and decisions are discussed more. Between the hours of 4pm and 11pm its just me.
Overall I’m very pleased with my new shift. I get more time to myself, with my family, and with my team. But then again it’s only the first week. Let’s talk again after a month.

I always loved this shift when I worked it as an operations manager at Macy’s once upon a time. I usually got up by 9:00 or so and had plenty of time with the wife and do things around the house. However, the wife was never really a fan. She didn’t like going to sleep w/o me in the house and invariably I would wake her up when I got home at 1am and she wouldnt be able to go back to sleep. Still to this day it matches my sleep pattern best.
